STRUCTURE IN THE HISTORY OF THE AMPHITHEATER "PORT OF THE ANGELS"

THE STRUCTURE OF THE THEATRE IN THE MIDDLE AGES

With the advent of Christianity, in medieval times, the temple was sacked and stripped of his embellishments of most of the stone steps, like most of the theaters and amphitheatres of those centuries.
In the upper cavea, the first 3 upper staircases were demolished, in order to arrange the fortified farm. For these reason, the tunnel used by actors was functional only as secret passage and to encourage the flow of water coming from today via Fosso (via Giardini). The waters became black, passing under the stable and latrines of the fortified complex. They were located in the north of the Temple. It is also said that from this passage, in 1307, also escaped some Templar Sergeants. (though there are not certain information to confirm this event).
Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions of Mount Cucco, barbarian invasions, deeply influenced its structure in those centuries. Its stones , which were easy to plunder, were finally used to build the edifice of a well-known businessman of Venice. The remains of its stands, was buried for centuries under piles of leaves, and later covered by a lot of waste, as well as landslides always coming of Monte Cucco, probably when the volcano was still active.
However, despite the censorship, someone, thanks to his paintings (just like the painter Giovanni Bellini), was able to describe the events of that lovely place forbidden to the Christians which, in steps under the kiosk (so named from the noble writer Guido Piovene) at different times, became a secluded refuge for hermits.(Fonte Ritrovamenti del CAI). Only a few privileged could attend performances from that cave, which allowed relief from the blazing sun.

THE CYCLOPIC INFERIOR CAVEA OF THE AMPHITHEATER PORT OF ANGELS

The ima cavea, that is the lower cavea, consisted of about 50 levels of steps, as the terraces. It ended the huge group of stands directly at the dock, at the foot of the Old Lake of Fontega, and measured about 80 meters in altitude.

DIMENSIONS OF THE ORCHESTRA

This Amphitheatre was once equipped with a pit, similar to the shape of the dock underlying its landing. The diameter of the semicircle of the orchestra measured 40 meters m2 in extension.

MEASUREMENT OF THE STALLS

When it incorporates the orchestra, it measures 12 radius and 300m 2 surface.

EVACUATION PLAN

The floating stage in this theater is represented by the raft, because its evocative scene is partly in the water and, if necessary, the stage is mounted on rafts. The determining factor is the natural view of the valley, that function as a stage.
The raft allows every kind of construction, and can be reached by experts through a track driveway.
